About
Mission
The Barnstable Intermediate School takes pride in its role as an important bridge for students as they make the transition from elementary education to secondary education on their way to becoming more self-reliant, disciplined, and caring young adults. Students and staff are engaged in challenging, differentiated instruction applying effective effort strategies to reach their maximum individual potential. Students contribute to a positive school climate that promotes a sense of belonging and connection to their school and community. Our success is measured by gains in individual student growth and academic achievement.
Vision
All students will experience individual classroom and whole school environments that recognize their collective and unique needs and support their growth as both students and individuals.
Equity Imperative
Barnstable Intermediate School will provide all students, regardless of color, creed, cultural or ethnic identity, community, family structure, gender identification and/or learning differences or interests, with appropriate access to instruction and support that will help them reach their full potential as well as meet or exceed common standards for achievement.
Values
BOLD
Our students take social and academic risks because they have the support of their school community behind them. They are not afraid to make mistakes, because BIS students recognize that every opportunity can be learned from. BIS students ask questions and push back on outside influences while advocating for resources and changes based on their research and experiences.
INNOVATIVE
Our students do not merely recall facts; rather they apply their knowledge to analyze and create. BIS students tackle problems in the real-world and critically analyze next steps. They connect with their community mentors and work together to solve issues at school, in Barnstable, and in their larger world. BIS students are empowered to explore their passions and aptitudes and weave them into their learning.
SUPPORTIVE
Our students navigate the difficult teenage years because of their learned social-and-emotional competencies. BIS students employ self-control, empathy, and accountability when cooperating with others. They feel safe and secure to champion their needs and the needs of others while taking initiative to find individual solutions. Our students know the many parts of themselves, and they use this knowledge to set goals and life paths for future success.

School Report Card
School Report Card
Report Card Letter
February 2024
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. A link to our school’s report card is available at https://reportcards.doe.mass.edu/2023/00200315.
The report card includes multiple measures of a school’s performance – more than just MCAS scores. It represents a new way of looking at school performance, by providing information on student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more.
Report cards are designed to be useful tools for everyone connected to our school. Families can use the information to have meaningful conversations with us about what the school is doing well and where there is room for improvement. Community and education leaders can use the information to better understand how to support students and our school.
To improve overall student performance in our school, we will continue addressing our MCAS performance and analyzing statewide and district-wide student assessments, in literacy, mathematics, and science, for all students. This has been a whole school approach with our MCAS focus. To improve student performance in our school, we have engaged our teachers in professional development that supports their ability to provide instruction to all students, have implemented data-based intervention courses, and have emphasized the importance of building social-emotional competencies through a daily advisory period. We encourage you to become involved in helping us improve our school. We see parents and guardians as critical partners in the success of our students and school, and we are grateful for your continued support.
Finally, if your child attends a school that receives federal Title I funds, you also have the right to request the following information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teachers:
- Whether your child’s teacher is licensed in the grade levels and subject areas they teach,
- Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under an emergency license or waiver,
- The college degree and major of your child’s teacher, and
- Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.
If you have questions about our school’s report card, would like to become involved in school improvement activities, or would like to request information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher, please contact us at 508-790-6460. To see our district’s report card or to search for other schools’ report cards, visit https://reportcards.doe.mass.edu/.
Sincerely,
Jason Conetta, Principal
